Origins and Spread of Islam Sentence Vocabulary 1/22/15
- Islam- the religious faith of Muslims; also the civilization based on the Islamic religion and the group of countries where Islam is the main religion
- Muhammad- a man born in about 570 C.E. who taught the faith of Islam
- polytheism-belief in more than one god
- prophet- a person who speaks or interprets the words of God
- monotheism- the belief in a single God
- Muslim- a follower of the Islamic faith
- boycott- a refusal to do business with an organization or group
- siege- a military action in which a place is surrounded and cut off to force those inside to surrender
- nomads- members of a group of people who have no set home but move from place to place

Islam - Sunnah-the example that Muhammad set for Muslims about how
to live - Five Pillars of Islam- the most basic acts of worship

worship - Ramadan- the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during
which Muslims are required to fast - jihad- Muslims’ struggle with
challenges within themselves and the world as they strive to please
God - shari'ah- the body of Islamic law based on the Qur’an and
the Sunnah

- adaptation- a change made to an existing object or way or doing things
- innovation- something new; an improvement
- cultural diffusion- the spread of cultural elements from one society to another
- philosopher- a scholar, teacher, or thinker who seeks knowledge
- immortal- able to live forever
- evolution- the slow process of change in plants and animals from simpler forms to more complex forms

- Crusades- A series of religious wars launched by European Christians to reclaim Jerusalem and other holy sites from the Muslims
- sultan- the supreme ruler of a Muslim state (a Muslim king)
- Holy Land- The area between Egypt and Syria that was the ancient homeland of the Jews and the place where Jesus Christ had lived; also called Palestine
- Inquisition- Roman Catholic court established to find and punish those who had strayed from the Roman Catholic faith
- anti-Semitism- Hostility or discrimination against Jews
- shah- a ruler in certain Middle East lands, especially Persia (modern day Iran)
- Reconquista- a series of wars launched by Christians to retake control of the Iberian peninsula (modern-day Spain) from the Muslims
